DR HORAKKAD K. KRISHNAN NAMBOORI : It is true beyond doubt that the concept of health was complete, comprehensive, and Holistic in the minds of vedic society. It was developed and flourished and practiced in vedic period. It was based on three basic concepts such as Tatwa, Sastra, Vyvahara. Many concepts of health science are in saplings form and they are treasures. In post vedic period these become branches, blossoms and given fruits. A few highly valuable fruits are Susrutha samhita, Charaka Samhita, and Ashtanga Samgraha. According to Susruta samhita, Ayurveda (The science of life ) is a Upaveda (subsidiary veda) of Adharva veda. Acharya Charaka opines that it is the upaveda of Rigveda. Vedas are full of basic health concepts and prescriptions in the form of sutras. Fundamental principles of Ayurveda like Panchamaha-bhootha and Tridosha theories have their roots in Vedic literature, in which concept of Agni is most important and needs detailed study. Rigveda starts with the word Agni and describe agni’s role in balancing the body’s physical, mental, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being. In vedas there are hundreds of medicinal plants have been described with their parts used, therapeutic usages, methods of collection and preparation methods. All eight branches of Ayurveda in sutra form explained in Adharva veda. Thristhambhas are also explained. On surgical side Aswins the twin GODS were surgeons blessed with extraordinary surgical skills. They were performed plastic surgery, replacement surgeries and transplantation of internal organs.
To reach our indigenous medicinal system (vedic health system) to suffering humanity, need to go deep study, understanding, and research, in to the insight of vedic literature. Vedic tradition is reach, beneficial to all, practical, holistic and complete, at the same time complex with not yielding its secrets easily. So it demands scrutiny. This paper is a humble attempt to this subject.
